SD Comicon 08

Man. Wow. What an intense experience.

I enjoyed EVERY second of Comic-Con. We showed up to the Convention Center sometime Wednesday afternoon (waiting in traffic for God knows how long) to pick up our badges and go to preview night. The line for pre-registration was ridiculously long - I'm pretty sure it was somewhere in the vicinity of tens of thousands but I may be exaggerating. Not realizing where the end of the line was, we cut about seventy-five percent of it. Just waltzed in front of some folks like we were always there, and for the most part either they didn't notice or were too polite and classy to say anything. All the while of course, Brian, Greg, and I pretended that we didn't realize we had cut at all.
After an hour or so in the line we got in and picked up our pre-reg badges and after briefly checking out the free stuff in the Convention bag, it was on to the Exhibit Hall!
We saw tons of comicelebrities just chatting with fans at their respective booths. I know this for certain because Greg punched me in the back to point out Ed Brubaker at the Marvel booth, signature hat on head chatting with aforementioned fans. Seconds later, he'd punch me in the back again to point out Humberto Ramos. As you can imagine, punching me in the back was about the only motor function that he had retained.
We wandered aimlessly for a while, completely awestruck and suffering from severe sensory overload until we realized that it was time to instead wander upstairs to see the sneak preview of JJ Abrams' new television vehicle 'Fringe'. Hard to tell if it will be any good, but since there isn't a scifi/supernatural drama I've been interested in since X-Files, I plan on giving it a gander this fall... on FOX btw.

I could summarize each day there, but I dunno if anyone'll actually sit down and read it all, so instead I'll summarize the experience. Above all, experiencing Comic-Con was inspiring, chatting with the friendly and informative guys at The Antidote Trust, meeting several of my favourite artists... and then getting sketchbooks, books, and even commissions from them was all incredibly exhilarating. I will point to my little chat with Carlos D'Anda when I was picking up my awesome Ladytron sketch as the single most inspiring moment I had. He gave a few words of encouragement never seeing a lick of my artwork that will stick with me for a while and is honestly still fueling the kick in production I've been experiencing over the past week.

I've started thumbnailing the script for my novella The Dragon of Samedi thanks to Greg, and I've started sketching the characters for an as yet untitled book by him with art by me :) These are exciting times, and soon I'll show you guys some of the stuff I've been working on.
Till very soon,
Rich

Comic-con was an inspirational experience to say the least. I personally am frothing at the mouth while waiting to see everything that you draw as a result of your inspiration. I guess that means I'll have to buckle down and deliver some scripts to you!
